The EME (Electrical Marine Engineering) Entrance Test is a specialized examination conducted to select candidates for the Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) or Electrical Marine Engineering stream in the Merchant Navy.
The test is designed for Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation Engineering graduates who aspire to work as Electro-Technical Officers (ETOs) onboard ships.
After passing the entrance test and completing the 6 to 12-month pre-sea training, candidates begin their career at sea in the engineering department.
What is EME in Merchant Navy?
The Electrical Marine Engineer (EME) or Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is responsible for managing and maintaining:
Electrical systems
Control and automation systems
Power generation and distribution
Communication and navigation systems
The role is vital for the smooth functioning of all electrical and electronic systems onboard vessels such as cargo ships, tankers, and cruise liners.

Eligibility Criteria for EME Entrance Test
Educational Qualification
Must hold a B.E./B.Tech or Diploma in:

Minimum 50% aggregate marks in the final year.
50% in English in 10th or 12th standard.
Age Limit
Maximum 28 years (on course commencement date).

Must meet DG Shipping medical standards.
Vision: 6/6 (no color blindness).
Medical certificate from a DG-approved doctor required.
Exam Pattern of EME Entrance Test
The EME Entrance Test is usually conducted by DGS-approved maritime training institutes or sponsoring shipping companies.
Stage 1: Written/Online Examination
Covers technical, aptitude, and English sections.
