How to Join NDA After 12th Step-by-Step Guide for Boys and Girls

What Is NDA, and Why Do So Many Students Dream of It?

The National Defence Academy is a tri-service institution where future officers of the Army, Navy and Air Force train together. After three years at NDA, cadets move to their respective academies for further training: the Indian Military Academy (Dehradun) for the Army, the Indian Naval Academy (Ezhimala) for the Navy, and the Air Force Academy (Dundigal) for the Air Force.

What makes NDA special is the timing. You begin your officer training at around 17 to 19 years of age, earn a graduation degree during the programme, and step into a commissioned career with a respected rank, a steady salary and a life of purpose.

Since 2022, girls can also appear for the NDA exam and become cadets. This was a landmark change, and every year more young women are taking this path.

Step 1: Check Your NDA Eligibility

Before anything else, confirm that you qualify. Here is a simple summary.

Criteria Requirement
Nationality
Indian citizen (certain categories of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibetan refugees are also eligible as per UPSC rules)
Gender
Unmarried boys and girls
Age
Roughly 16.5 to 19.5 years at the time of joining the course. The exact date-of-birth window is announced in every notification
Education (Army wing)
Class 12 passed or appearing, in any stream
Education (Air Force and Naval wings)
Class 12 passed or appearing, with Physics and Mathematics
Marital status
Must be unmarried until the course is completed

📌 A helpful tip: if you are still in Class 12, you can apply. You will need to show your pass certificate later, as per UPSC instructions.

For the latest age limits and dates, you can read our detailed guide on NDA 1 2027: Age Limit, Notification, Exam Date, Syllabus & Eligibility.

Which Stream Should You Choose in Class 12?

If you already know you want the Air Force or Navy, take Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. If you are aiming for the Army wing only, any stream will do, but even then most toppers prefer Science because the NDA Maths paper is based on Class 11 and 12 level topics. Arts and Commerce students can absolutely qualify, they simply need to put in a little extra effort on Maths.

Step 2: Know the NDA Exam Calendar

UPSC conducts the NDA & NA examination twice a year:

  • NDA I: notification usually in December, exam in April.
  • NDA II: notification usually in May, exam in September.

The notification is released on the official UPSC website (upsc.gov.in). Bookmark it, and keep a scanned photo, signature and ID ready before the application window opens. Dates can shift slightly each year, so always confirm on the official notice.

Step 3: Fill the Online Application Form

The application is simple, but small mistakes cause big problems later. Keep these points in mind:

  • Register through the UPSC one-time registration (OTR) system if you have not done so already.
  • Enter your name, date of birth and parents’ details exactly as printed on your Class 10 certificate.
  • Choose your exam centre carefully. Pick the city you can travel to comfortably.
  • Pay the fee online. Candidates from certain categories receive fee relaxation.
  • Download and save the confirmation page.

We always tell our students: fill the form with a calm mind, double-check every field, and ask a parent or mentor to look at it once before you press submit.

Step 4: Understand the NDA Written Exam Pattern

The written exam is an objective (MCQ) test of 900 marks.

Paper Questions Maximum Marks Time
Mathematics
120
300
2.5 hours
General Ability Test (English + General Knowledge)
150
600
2.5 hours
  • English carries 200 marks (50 questions).
  • General Knowledge carries 400 marks (100 questions) covering Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography and Current Events.
  • Negative marking applies: one-third of the marks allotted to a question are deducted for every wrong answer.

This negative marking is why smart guessing matters. Attempt a question only when you can eliminate at least a couple of options.

If you want a subject-wise breakdown, read our NDA Syllabus 2027: Subject-Wise Topics for Maths, English & General Knowledge.

What Is a Good Score?

Cut-offs change every year depending on the difficulty level and the number of vacancies. Rather than chasing a fixed number, aim to score well above the previous year’s cut-off in both papers. Students who clear the written exam comfortably also feel far more confident in the SSB.

Step 5: Clear the SSB Interview (The Real Test of Character)

If you qualify the written exam, UPSC sends your result to the Services Selection Board. You will receive a call letter for the SSB, held at one of the selection centres across India.

The SSB runs for five days and carries 900 marks. It is not about being the smartest or the loudest person in the room. It is about who you are when you are under pressure.

Day 1 (Screening): Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test and Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT). Only shortlisted candidates move forward.

Days 2 to 5 (Stage II):

  • Psychology tests: Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT) and Self Description.
  • Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks: group discussion, group planning exercise, outdoor tasks such as the progressive group task, individual obstacles and command task.
  • Personal interview with the Interviewing Officer.
  • Conference: a final discussion where all assessors decide your recommendation.

The qualities assessors look for are often called the Officer Like Qualities (OLQs): clear thinking, confidence, teamwork, responsibility, initiative, courage and a sense of humour. You cannot fake them for five days. You can, however, build them over months of honest practice.

Step 6: Medical Examination

Candidates recommended by the SSB go through a detailed medical test at a military hospital. It checks your height, weight, eyesight, hearing, dental health and general fitness.

A few practical suggestions:

  • Get a basic health check-up early, so that any treatable issue (such as dental problems) can be fixed in advance.
  • Learn the medical standards for the wing you want. Air Force standards are stricter than the Army’s.
  • Do not rely on rumours. Ask a qualified doctor or a trusted mentor.

Step 7: Final Merit List and Joining

Your final rank is prepared by combining your written exam marks and SSB marks. Based on your rank, your preference and the available vacancies, you are allotted a service: Army, Navy or Air Force. Once you are in the list, you report to NDA Khadakwasla, Pune, and your journey as a cadet begins.

Over three years you will study for a degree, train physically, learn military leadership and live the cadet life. Many officers say these were the most formative years of their lives.

Is the Process the Same for Boys and Girls?

Yes. Girls and boys appear for the same written exam, the same SSB and the same medical standards that apply to officer entry. The difference is in the number of vacancies, which are fewer for girls at present and are announced in each notification. Competition is tough, but every year deserving girls clear the process. If you have the desire and discipline, nothing should stop you from applying.

How to Prepare for NDA While Studying in Class 12

This is the question we hear most from parents and students. Here is a plan that has worked for many aspirants.

  1. Make NCERT your base. Class 11 and 12 Maths and Class 9 to 12 Science are the foundation of both papers.
  2. Practise Maths daily. Even 90 minutes a day builds speed. Focus on Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus basics, Coordinate Geometry, Matrices and Statistics.
  3. Read an English newspaper. It improves vocabulary, comprehension and your awareness of current affairs together.
  4. Solve previous year papers. Time yourself. After each paper, study your mistakes, not just your score.
  5. Work on fitness. Running, push-ups, sit-ups and a good sleep routine make you stronger for the SSB and the training that follows.
  6. Start building OLQs early. Take part in team sports, volunteer, lead a small project at school. These experiences give you genuine answers in the SSB.
  7. Avoid information overload. Choose one reliable source for each subject and revise it again and again.

Should You Join an NDA Coaching Institute?

Self-study can work, but most students find that structured guidance saves precious months. A good coaching institute gives you a clear timetable, regular mock tests, doubt-solving, and, most importantly, SSB-oriented training from people who have worn the uniform.

At Delhi Career Group, we have been training defence aspirants since 1999. Our programmes combine NDA written exam preparation with SSB guidance, and our faculty includes experienced ex-servicemen such as Col. Puneet Sehgal, who bring real-world insight into the classroom. We run branches in Delhi, Pune, Bhopal, Chandigarh and Kolkata, and hostel facility is available at all five branches for students who come from other cities.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Waiting until Class 12 board exams are over to start preparing.
  • Ignoring English and General Knowledge because Maths feels scarier.
  • Memorising SSB answers instead of being natural.
  • Neglecting physical fitness until the last month.
  • Applying without reading the official notification carefully.
  • Giving up after one attempt. Many successful officers cleared NDA in their second or third attempt, so use every attempt wisely while you are within the age limit.
