The Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) Test is an entrance examination conducted by DG Shipping–approved maritime institutes or shipping companies to select eligible engineering graduates for 1-year pre-sea GME training.After successful training and sea service, candidates can join merchant ships as Marine Engineer Officers.
Purpose of the GME Test
The GME test assesses a candidate’s:
Technical knowledge (Mechanical/Marine Engineering)
Problem-solving ability
General aptitude
English communication skills
Understanding of maritime awareness
This ensures that only technically sound and physically fit candidates enter the Merchant Navy engineering stream.
Eligibility Criteria for GME Entrance Test
Educational Qualification
B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture from an AICTE-approved institute.
Minimum 50% marks in final year.
50% marks in English in 10th or 12th standard.
Age Limit
Maximum Age: 28 years (as on the date of course commencement).
Relaxation: May vary slightly depending on institute/company.
Medical Standards
Candidate must be medically fit as per DG Shipping norms.
Vision: 6/6 in both eyes, no color blindness.
A medical fitness certificate from a DG Shipping–approved doctor is mandatory.
Exam Pattern of GME Test
The GME test generally includes three stages:
Stage 1: Written/Online Test
Covers core technical subjects and aptitude.

Once selected:
Candidate joins a 1-year residential pre-sea training program.
After course completion, undergoes 6–9 months onboard training as a Junior Engineer.
Eligible to appear for MEO Class IV Certificate of Competency (CoC) examination.
Begins sea career as Fourth Engineer on merchant vessels.
